A company earns a mention in an AI answer, someone screenshots it, and the marketing team immediately wants more. The request usually sounds simple: make every page easier for answer engines to cite. Then the work turns into a pile of guesses about FAQs, schema, page length, bots, and special files.
AEO needs a calmer definition. Answer engine optimization is the work of making useful information eligible to be found, easy to interpret, well supported, and worth choosing when a search or AI system builds an answer. It also includes measuring that visibility without pretending a citation is the same thing as a lead.
Google’s current AI search guide makes the central point plainly: its generative search features still rely on core Search systems, and the company does not require a separate set of AEO tricks. Google recommends valuable, non-commodity content, a clear technical structure, honest measurement, and the same search fundamentals that help people find good pages in the first place.
That does not make AEO meaningless. It makes the audit more useful. Instead of looking for one magic tag, you can inspect the chain from crawling to evidence to conversion and fix the weakest link.

The wrong response is to publish a separate page for every imagined variation. How to score the audit
Score each check as pass, needs work, or blocked. A blocked check prevents the rest of the page from doing its job. For example, an excellent guide that returns a server error to crawlers is blocked. A page with thin examples but sound indexing may only need work. This simple scale keeps the team from polishing low-impact details while a basic failure remains open.

Check 1: Can the page be crawled and rendered?
Begin with the response a crawler actually receives. Check robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules, status codes, redirects, JavaScript rendering, and the HTML returned to the relevant crawler. A page that looks normal in a signed-in browser can still return a challenge, a blank application shell, or a different status to automated systems.
Important information should be available as text in the rendered page. That does not mean every site must avoid JavaScript. It means the answer, evidence, headings, and links should survive the rendering path instead of living only in an interaction a crawler may never trigger. Google’s AI features documentation lists crawl access, internal links, page experience, textual content, and matching structured data among the same useful SEO foundations.

Check 2: Is the page indexable and snippet-eligible?
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. That makes canonical tags, noindex directives, snippet controls, and accidental duplicate URLs part of the AEO audit. Passing those checks creates eligibility. It does not create a promise that the page will be indexed, ranked, cited, or shown.
Review nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet choices with care. These controls can be useful when a publisher wants to limit how text is displayed, but they also change what can be shown from the page in supported Google Search experiences. Record the business reason for each restriction so a later cleanup does not remove a deliberate control.
Check 3: Does the page solve one real task?
A page can contain dozens of questions and still lack a clear job. Write down the audience, the situation, and the decision in one sentence. A good working statement might be: this page helps a facilities manager compare repair and replacement options after a commercial HVAC unit fails. That is more useful than saying the page targets commercial HVAC questions.
Then inspect every section against that task. Pricing factors, downtime, warranty tradeoffs, repair history, and the information needed for an estimate may belong. A generic paragraph about the history of air conditioning probably does not. Relevance becomes easier to judge when the team agrees on the decision the page should support.
Check 4: Is the answer clear without becoming thin?
Direct answers help readers, but direct does not mean one sentence followed by padding. State the practical answer early, then explain the conditions that could change it. A medical, legal, financial, or safety-related answer often needs more qualification and sourcing than a simple product instruction. The amount of context should follow the risk and complexity of the decision.
Google specifically says publishers do not need to break content into tiny pieces for its generative Search features, and there is no ideal page length. Use headings, lists, and tables when they make the material easier to scan. Do not force every paragraph into a miniature answer block that makes the article tiring to read.

Check 5: Does the page add source-specific value?
If an article can be recreated from the first five search results without adding a new example, method, calculation, image, or judgment, it is probably commodity content. AEO does not improve when the site publishes another summary of the same summary. It improves when the page gives a system and a reader something specific to retrieve.
Source-specific value can be modest. A local contractor can show a real inspection checklist with customer details removed. A software company can explain the test conditions behind a benchmark. A retailer can photograph how two materials wear after the same use. A consultant can publish an anonymized decision tree and explain where teams usually make the wrong call.
Original value also includes a defensible point of view. If every option is described as equally good for everyone, the reader receives little help. State which option you would choose in a defined situation, explain why, and name the facts that would make you change your mind.
Check 6: Can important claims be verified?
Numbers need an origin, scope, and date. A statement such as most customers save 30 percent is not useful without the population, measurement period, comparison point, exclusions, and source. The same rule applies to rankings, market-share claims, health outcomes, legal statements, and performance estimates.
Link to primary documentation when the claim is about a platform feature. Describe the method when the number comes from your own analysis. Name the author or reviewer when their background helps the reader judge the material. And when a fact can change, add a reviewed or updated date that reflects a real check, not an automatic timestamp.
Authority can also be supported away from the page. Relevant reporting, interviews, public records, and third-party references help people check who a company is and what it has done. Ethical digital PR is useful here because it creates real evidence, not manufactured mentions placed only to influence an answer system.
Check 7: Are names and business details consistent?
A system has a harder job when the same service, product, person, or location is described five different ways without explanation. Use the official business name consistently. Connect former names to current names when needed. Make service areas, contact details, credentials, product attributes, and organization relationships clear across the site.
For local businesses, compare the website with major business profiles and directories the company controls. For ecommerce, compare visible product details with feeds. For organizations with several brands, explain the parent, brand, and location relationships instead of expecting a logo alone to do the work.
Check 8: Does structured data match the page?
Structured data can help search systems understand eligible page features, but Google says there is no special schema required for generative AI search. The audit should focus on supported types that fit the page, correct properties, stable identifiers, and a close match between the markup and what a visitor can see.
Do not add FAQ markup to a page that does not show those questions and answers. Do not mark a service page as a product only because the properties look useful. Do not insert review values the page cannot substantiate. Markup is a description of the visible content, not a private channel for extra claims.
Check 9: Do internal links explain the page’s role?
Internal links help crawlers find pages and help readers understand how one answer connects to a larger topic. Link from relevant service pages, guides, and category pages using words that describe the destination. A link labeled AEO measurement guide gives more context than read more.
The page should link out as well. If a passage introduces a technical term, link to the detailed guide. If it discusses implementation help, link to the relevant service. Check 10: Is the page unique enough to deserve its URL?
Search and AI systems do not need twenty near-identical pages that swap a city, profession, or question in the heading. Google’s generative AI guidance warns against producing many query variations mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses. A large page count does not make a site more relevant by itself.
Compare the proposed page with every close sibling. The audience, decision, evidence, examples, constraints, and next step should be meaningfully different. If only the keyword changes, merge the material into a stronger page or rethink the purpose. If two URLs must remain for operational reasons, use canonical and linking choices that reflect which version should be found.

Check 11: Are you measuring visibility without inventing attribution?
A citation count is a visibility measure. It is not a ranking, an endorsement, a unique person, a click, or a sale. Google and Microsoft expose different data, so the report should preserve those differences instead of forcing every platform into one universal AEO score.

Being cited is not the finish line. A person who clicks after reading an AI answer may arrive with more context and a narrower question than an ordinary visitor. The page should make it easy to verify the cited point, see related evidence, understand the offer, and choose a sensible next action.
Match the call to action to the article. A pricing comparison can link to a scoped estimate. A technical guide can offer an audit. A research article can provide the method or full data. Do not force every informational visitor into the same sales form before they can check the claim that brought them to the page.

The team should fix rendering first, strengthen the one page that already has evidence of demand, and decide which city pages deserve to exist. Adding more FAQs to all seven pages would create activity, but it would not solve the blocked content, unsupported claim, or duplication.
